Too Many Cooks

11:35 PM November 15

The kitchen of Dr. Kerry Weaver's home

Standing in the middle of the kitchen in a pair of boxers and heather T-shirt she felt human for the first time today. Work had been a bear and finally the noise in her head was silent, she looked into the fridge and knew she had to make something. Pancakes? No, too messy, besides the last time they had had pancakes more syrup was poured on each other than the cakes. Risotto? No, it would take too long. Sara was so deep in thought she didn't hear the door open and Kerry call out softly," Honey? Are you home?"

Then came the touch, arms stealing around her waist and a soft front molding itself to a very tense back. The tension melted away as she let her breath go in a rush and swayed back into Kerry's arms,

"Hey Babe! How was your day?" asked Kerry.

As Sara turned in Kerry's arms she first saw those green eyes, smiling at her and she ducked in for a quick kiss.

Breaking the kiss Sara hugged Kerry close " God, it's good to see you, I had a hell of a day, you?"

Kerry pulled back and turned to go hang up her coat, "It was o.k. Romano and Susan Lewis look like they are getting closer than ever, I have to tell her to get her shots updated if she is going to date him".

Sara laughed her kitchen, at the restaurant, was not that much different from Kerry's ER, full of crazy people with sharp implements.

"You almost got a visit from me today," called Sara from the kitchen.

" What? Kerry asked as she walked back into the kitchen "What happened? Are you all right?
Sara laughed "Yeah I'm fine just scorched, there was a small fire in the kitchen and one of the prep guys tried to put it out with water and the fire flared. I beat it out with a towel and got burned in the process".

"Let me see" Kerry took Sara's hand in hers and examined the burn, it was ok but Sara reveled in the fact that this amazing woman cared for her. "Sara, you need to stop trying to do everything in that kitchen there are other ways to put out fires without beating it out with a towel".

"Funny, I got the same lecture from the firefighter that responded to the call. In fact Lopez wanted me to go to Country to have my hand checked out and when I said that wasn't necessary, that I knew a doctor there and would get checked out later she had a strange look on her face and dropped the subject. In fact she had the same look that you have right now, what's going on?

Kerry snapped out of the fugue she was in at the mention of Sandy's name and looked into Sara's eyes "Sandy Lopez is the firefighter that I dated before I met you".

"She's the woman who kissed you in the middle of the ER? Sara was stunned, when Kerry told her that story she just assumed that Kerry had killed that person. "Wow, if I had known that I might not have invited her to come back for a free meal. But I guess I have to thank her if she hadn't done that I don't know that you would have ever asked me out."

A smile played on Kerry's lips as she twined her arms around Sara's waist and softly kissed her neck "I don't know about that, after the first bite of that veal roulade, I knew I had to meet the person who could cook like that. When you walked out of the doors to the kitchen I knew I had to get to know you better.

The Oaks Restaurant

The kitchen was jumping, it was a Friday night during the first nice weekend of the spring and it seemed all of Chicago had decided to eat out. Sara stood at the expediter line of the kitchen and watched as the hot line pumped out dish after dish of her creations and she was happy. It had taken a while to get here, but she finally made it, her kitchen, her staff, her restaurant. It was 8:30 and the crowds were beginning to thin out when Carmen, her hostess, came in "Chef? A patron want's to know, if we use balsamic vinegar in the veal and if we do how old is it?

Sara was stunned, "Are you sure that's not a critic? Or a magazine writer that is not a normal question."

Carmen shrugged her shoulders "Come here I'll show you." She led Sara to the doors to the kitchen and pointed out a redheaded woman sitting alone eating. Sara was stunned, captivated, entranced here was a woman beyond beautiful who knew food.

Sara turned to Carmen and said "Tell her I'll be out in just a minute, and send her another glass of wine". She turned to her sous chef Tim and said "Hold down the line I am going to talk to a patron, if things get hairy come get me". Sara changed her jacket and gathered her resolve and walked out onto the floor. As she neared the table the woman's waiter brought the new glass of wine and Sara stopped to hear what she had to say, she heard the waiter explain that it was from the Chef and it was compliments of the house. The woman told him to thank the Chef for her and that's when Sara walked up to her table, "If you want to thank the Chef, I accept". Sara stuck out her hand and said "Hi, I am Sara Walker, the Chef and owner of the Oaks and you are?"

The redhead looked up and Sara was struck by a pair of green eyes, " Hi, I am Kerry Weaver. I didn't mean to drag you out of the kitchen."

" That's not a problem it's slowing down a bit and I wanted to answer your question. By the way how did you know about the balsamic vinegar?

Kerry laughed " I am a bit of a cook myself and I have a good sense of taste, I just picked up on it. I have never eaten here and I heard some of my staff talking about it in such glowing terms I had to see if they were right, and I have to say they are. Everything is wonderful!"

Sara thought "Well, Darlin' if you want me to like you that's the way to go, compliment my food and I am yours for life" "Thanks we work real hard to make everything perfect here, I am glad you like it."

"Can you sit down?" Kerry asked "For a couple of minutes, sure" Sara sat across from this woman who had her charmed and they proceeded to talk about food, work and life in Chicago. Sara looked at her watch and started "I have to get back in the kitchen, but it was wonderful meeting you. I hope that I'll see you here again."

"I will defiantly be back and thanks again for the wine."

As Sara passed Carmen she said "The dinners on me and I am sending out dessert in about 5 minutes" Sara went back into the kitchen and made a molten chocolate cake with sun-dried cherry sauce for Kerry and watched as she ate it. The look on her face was worth it.

About 30 minutes later Carmen came into the kitchen as the staff was cleaning up "Where's Chef?"

"I am over here." Sara said popping her head out of her kitchen office.

"You have a visitor" Kerry walked into the kitchen and Sara saw the crutch for the first time, it didn't seem to slow her down or impeded her in any way.

Kerry walked to the door of the small office where Sara stood and said "I just wanted to thank you for dinner and I had to do this before I left. Would you like to go out? I realize that I maybe overstepping things but I would love to see you out of those whites and this kitchen". Sara grinned at what Kerry had said and Kerry picked up on the double entandre about the same time. A blush rose to her cheeks as she stammered "God I am so bad at this, I mean I would love to see you outside of your restaurant."

"That would be wonderful, sure anytime" Sara gave Kerry her card and a kiss on the cheek as she walked her out.

Kerry's kitchen

"I got so much grief from the guys that night over you, little did they know that I was the one trying to pick you up". Sara was caught up in the play of Kerry's lips on her neck, she moved her hands up to Kerry's head and said

" I haven't given you a proper welcome home kiss yet"

"No you haven't". Sara brought Kerry's face up to hers and softly brushed her lips over Kerry's. She wanted to take it slow and savor this but the urge was too strong, she dipped her lips to Kerry's and flicking the tip of her tongue she traced the out-line of her lips. Kerry moaned a low growl at the back of her throat and Sara knew that meant go ahead do with me what you will. So she let herself sink into the warmth that was Kerry's mouth. Sara felt Kerry's hands running up the sides of her torso, grazing the sides of her breasts. Sara shivered as Kerry's soft hand cupped her T-shirt covered breast. As Kerry drew her thumb over her nipple she groaned and broke off the kiss begging for air. "God Kerry, the things you do to me."

Kerry chuckled as she slipped a hand under the shirt and finally felt skin on skin, " What do I do, I am just making sure you didn't injure yourself this afternoon being super chef ".

"Kerry" Sara said, " I burned my hand not my chest".

"A doctor has to be thorough, doesn't she."

"Are you hungry?" Sara asked, praying the answer was no.

"Well I haven't eaten since lunch and since it is 11:45 at night, I guess it could wait a little longer."

"Good, because the kitchen is closed and the chef is taking her girlfriend to bed" With that Sara pulled Kerry into a searing kiss and picked her up carrying her down the hall. Thanking the Gods that this woman had come into her life.
